A „Wahlärztin” is a specialist with a private practice who does not have a contract with the health insurance company. Every patient can visit a Wahlärztin who issues a Honorarnote (receipt). The patient has to pay the doctor’s fee,

Eyelid Surgery

1) Chalazion

A chalazion is a painless swelling of the eyelid, about the size of a pea, caused by blockage of the so-called Meibomian gland. The nodule is located at the edge of the eyelid and enlarges over several weeks. Usually, the nodules are benign and will disappear over time (about 2 months).

What to expect? Why are these examinations are compulsory in Austria?

MKP-I: this is the first examination that is carried out around the 1st birthday (10th-14th months of age).

MKP-II: this is the second examination that that is carried out around the 2nd birthday (22nd-26th months of age)

Visual acuity (eyesight) and three-dimensional vision develop during the first 2 years.

Strabismus Management

Strabismus (squint or crossed eyes) is caused by an imbalance of eye muscles that leads to a deviation (misalignment) in the direction of increased muscle tension. It may also be caused by a fusion insufficiency: the separate and slightly different images received from the two eyes cannot be fused into an overlaped single image in the brain.

What is Pediatric Ophthalmology?

A child is not simply a “little adult.” There are many special aspects that ophthalmologists have to consider when examining and treating children.

Pediatric ophthalmology is a subspecialty of ophthalmology where the normal uninterrupted visual development is the main priority. Eye problems (such as ametropia, strabismus, amblyopia, or organic reasons) in childhood must be recognized and treated as soon as possible.
